THEY have a combined age approaching 90 years and have long retired from elite competition.
Guy Leech, 46, and Brad Beven, 41, were both at the top of their sports in the 1980s and ‘90s respectively, both multiple national and international champions.
Last weekend, at the Anaconda Adventure Race in Forster-Tuncurry, the veteran athletes wound back the clock, beating all comers - including some in their teens - to win the 114km combined teams’ race over two days...
“That makes it sweeter,” Beven said of beating the youngsters. “For us, I don’t think either of us had done something like that before.
“Going into it, it was a bit of an unknown. It was great to team up with Guy.
“And even though we are a little long in the tooth, we’ve got a lot of years and experience behind us. It was very enjoyable.”
Making the win all the more remarkable for the Leech-Beven combination was the fact that some teams had up to four competitors alternating between the runs, swims, ocean paddles or mountain-biking legs that made up the course.
